It involves long stretches away from family and friends, often in remote and otherwise inhospitable places. <\/span>Long hours and a lack of the mod-cons we enjoy at home can make FIFO a hard slog, but a sense of community in the camp village and some access to modern infrastructure,\u00a0<\/span>like good WiFi,<\/span><\/strong> can help.\u00a0<\/span>Determining what FIFO workers feel about their mine site environment is critical to making positive changes. <\/span><\/p>\n

With that in mind, Creating Communities has launched the FIFO Insider survey, the first of its kind aimed at understanding what FIFO workers rely on to get through their stint and, on the flip side, what leads to burnout.\u00a0 <\/span>Enhanced by the processing power of\u00a0<\/span>Artificial Intelligence<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(AI), the survey will gather large amounts of data, hoping to gain deep insights into the \u201csocial fabric and the nature of community\u201d on remote sites.<\/span><\/p>\n

UN Wants More Minerals for Energy Transition<\/span><\/h2>\n

COP28 is underway in Dubai, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has signaled the critical role that critical minerals will play in the energy transition. <\/span>As the world\u2019s foremost climate conference, COP28 aims to unite countries to combat the threat of climate change and\u00a0<\/span>embrace the energy transition<\/span><\/strong> full-heartedly.\u00a0<\/span>Mr Guterees has used his time to highlight the importance of critical miners in the hunt for net zero, stating that their \u201cavailability and accessibility are crucial for the world to reach the 2015 Paris Agreement goals.\u201d <\/span>The Paris Agreement is designed to limit the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels, ideally keeping temperature increases to just 1.5\u00b0C.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

According to Mr Guterres, COP28 must bind countries to triple their renewable capacity, double energy efficiency, and bring clean energy to all by 2030. <\/span>\u201cWe need a\u00a0<\/span>just, fair, and equitable transition<\/span><\/strong> from fossil fuels to renewables. The very existence of some countries in this room depends on it,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe (COP28) Panel will bring together governments, international organizations, industry, and civil society to develop common and voluntary principles to guide extractive sectors in the years ahead in the name of justice and sustainability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rio Eyes new Rhodes Ridge Iron Ore Project<\/span><\/h2>\n

Global mining major Rio Tinto is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into the feasibility of a new Western Australian iron ore project. <\/span>After completing a $110 million pre-feasibility study on the Rhodes Ridge iron ore deposit, its chances of becoming a reality have improved as Rio eyes a long-term source of\u00a0<\/span>high-grade Fe<\/span><\/strong> in the state. <\/span>Rio has said it plans to spend around\u00a0<\/span>$400 million<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0on the potential project over the next five years, including a hub at the tenement’s northern end.<\/span>\u00a0According to the company\u2019s iron ore chief, Simon Trott, \u201cthe size and quality of the resource base at Rhodes Ridge have the potential to underpin our iron ore business in the Pilbara for decades to come.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rhodes Ridge project would represent a joint venture between Rio Tinto and Wright Prospecting, each holding a 50% stake. <\/span>\u201cIn the longer term, the resource could support a world-class mining hub with a potential capacity of more than 100 million tonnes of high-quality iron ore a year,\u201d Mr Trott said.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe are committed to working closely with the Traditional Owners, the Nyiyaparli and Ngarlawangga People, as we progress this project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
