Steel gets a Green Light in the Pilbara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the sun sets on the boom years of Australian iron ore exports, the door swings open for a new addition to the traditional value chain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steelmaking is a heavy industry well past its prime in Australia, but new technologies combined with a wealth of ore still in the ground could shake things up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much hype has been made around green hydrogen production in the Pilbara in recent years. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the same old (simple) iron ore tactics of production and shipment may not suit liquid hydrogen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One solution uses green hydrogen and iron ore together for great effect.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a new industry called <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/green-steel-deal-decarbonisation-and-net-zero\/\">Green Steelmaking<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the key Pilbara players are scoping their own steelmaking adventures. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the latest is Rio Tinto, who inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China\u2019s Baowu to trial low-carbon steelmaking in Western Australia (WA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rio and the Chinese giant will work towards the following:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researching, constructing and demonstrating a pilot-scale electric smelter for low-carbon steel making<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optimising pelletisation technology for low-carbon shaft furnace-based direct reduction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expanding China Baowu\u2019s HyCROF technology, which can minimise CO2 emissions\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jointly studying opportunities for production of low-carbon iron in WA<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rio Tinto\u2019s chief executive of iron ore Simon Trott said the firm is proud of its 40-year relationship with China Baowu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe look forward to progressing this study into the potential of low-carbon iron making in Western Australia as we work to ensure a positive future for Pilbara ores in a green steel world,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cummins Engines Accelerate Towards Net Zero<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a provider of high-horsepower diesel engines for mining operations, Cummins has the power to set industry standards. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Committed to net zero carbon by 2050, Cummins, in partnership with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), is exploring an array of new clean fuel technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of those is <a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/all-aboard-the-green-mining-revolution\/\">HVO diesel<\/a>, made from hydrotreated vegetable oil.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HVO is made from vegetable oils and animal fats and can reduce carbon emissions by <\/span><b>up to 90%.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The top-rated Cummins engine \u2013 the 4400hp QSK95 \u2013 can now safely be used with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) \u2013 or \u2018renewable diesel\u2019 \u2013 without affecting Tier 4 emissions compliance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company also expects its full range of high-horsepower engines to be approved for HVO use in 2023.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The HVO solutions are just one of many that equipment manufacturers for the mining industry are exploring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Other major options include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal combustion (clean diesel, hydrogen and natural gas),\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternative fuel technology (developing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hybrid, battery-electric and fuel-cell electric<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cummins also works with OEMs to advance zero-emission mining haul trucks using hydrogen fuel cells. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their team has deployed several thousand fuel cells in on-highway and off-highway applications alongside hundreds of active electrolysers that turn water into hydrogen in a process known as electrolysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Resource Exploration Spending Reaches New Highs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has reported a significant uptick in spending on resource exploration. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trend was most pronounced in Tasmania and South Australia (SA), as both states sought to ramp up their resources industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While nationally, exploration spending grew by 0.7% over the recent quarter.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to 12 months ago, however, this represents a 4% increase across Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In SA, the ABS data highlights $64.2 million in spending on exploration in Q1, up <\/span><b>$16.7 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the December 2022 quarter.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This exceeds the $61 million spent on exploration by South Australia in its previous record-earning quarter to December 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tasmania\u2019s Exploration expenditure also exploded, with the latest ABS information showing $44.5 million from 12 months to March 2023. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Tasmania\u2019s Minister for Resources, Felix Ellis, mineral exploration in the state is now at its highest level on record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere has been an increase in exploration expenditure of <\/span><b>93 per cent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the preceding 12-month period,\u201d Ellis said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With
