<\/span><b>1%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the world\u2019s population lived within its air quality guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, air pollution is simply \u201cout of sight, out of mind\u201d for many.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as the figures highlight, it&#8217;s a dangerous view to hold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WHO guidelines cover a mix of air pollutants, including particulate matter, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the most harmful Particulate Matter (PM), as readers in heavy industry know well, are those that measure 2.5 microns across or less. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commonly known as PM 2.5, Its healthy limits align with an annual average of 0-5 \u03bcg\/m\u00b3. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many government regulations are set up to control PM 2.5 emissions in response to its harmful flow on health effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Some of the most significant impacts are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart disease\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stroke\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung cancer\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic respiratory diseases<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With most countries falling outside the WHO guidelines, it&#8217;s fair to ask whether the standards are realistic or simply setting governments up to fail? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as we\u2019ll see, the costs of ignoring air pollution are high in both human and economic terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Risks of Uncontrolled Air Pollution<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the array of data and different \u201cinterim\u201d WHO guidelines can be hard to grasp, one statistic is not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mortality rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The non-accidental mortality rate in areas where PM 2.5 exceeds 0-5 \u03bcg\/m\u00b3 guidelines is undeniably high.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s a rather morbid example:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If particulate matter is 10 \u03bcg\/m\u00b3 above safe levels, there will be four extra deaths per 100 people annually. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add another 5 \u03bcg\/m\u00b3, and the excess death rate doubles to 8 per 100 people. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This trend continues until the levels reach 35 \u03bcg\/m\u00b3 and above, where mortality rates leave the trend line, potentially resulting in an explosion of deaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, about 14% of countries, including Chad, India, Pakistan, Qatar, and Nigeria, reported levels above this threshold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scary stuff!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is why the guidelines are there, and most countries are working hard to bring down their PM levels despite facing numerous challenges.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the things we take for granted in modern life are increasingly located or produced in developing countries, which then bear the brunt of the pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>At a glance, the primary pollutant sources include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industrial activities\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transportation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy production\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agricultural 400;\">Around the world, various strategies are working to help curb dangerous air pollution levels. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these use quickly developing technology, already aligned with the global clean energy transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some locations like Mexico City \u2013 situated in a bowl lower than the surrounding area \u2013 toxic vehicle emissions build-up, with no natural way to disperse. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this situation, it&#8217;s easy to see the benefits that a transition to <a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/electric-vehicle-transition-in-the-mining-industry\/\">Electric Vehicle technology<\/a> would make.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight:
