{"id":81398,"date":"2023-05-11T05:55:40","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T05:55:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/?p=81398"},"modified":"2023-06-27T05:19:47","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T05:19:47","slug":"impact-of-dust-on-public-health-and-strategies-for-mitigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/impact-of-dust-on-public-health-and-strategies-for-mitigation\/","title":{"rendered":"Impact of dust on public health and strategies for mitigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the World Health Organization (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">WHO), almost all of the global population breathe air that contains <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">high levels of pollutants<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, with low-income countries suffering from the most exposures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The effects of air pollution are associated with 7 million premature deaths annually, one major source being particulate matter pollution which mainly includes; dust and soot.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The estimated yearly global <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">premature deaths<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> attributable to ambient particulate matter of size 2.5mm (PM<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2.5 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">) exposure in 2019 amount to about 3 million, with the highest number of deaths occurring in Asia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A study of global <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8150667\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">dust storms&#8217; impacts on health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> indicates that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">dust storms have significant public health impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition to exacerbating short-term health effects, they may also cause long-term health effects, which may include health problems for pregnant mothers, and infants, the cognitive function of children, and an increase in infectious diseases.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">specific consequences<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of dust pollution on public health include;\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dust outbreaks can cause bacterial infections<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35682493\/#:~:text=A%20significant%20association%20of%20dust,19%2C%20pulmonary%20tuberculosis%20and%20coccidioidomycosis.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">systematic review<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of infectious diseases associated with dust storms concludes <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">desert dust outbreaks cause a significant number of pathogenic microorganisms and an association between dust events and infectious disease outbreaks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It leads to allergic response<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Even though there is no specific study linking road, mining, or construction dust to allergic reactions and human response to each allergen being different from person to person, asthmatic patients have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">shown<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> an increased risk of developing exacerbations from polluted air in general. It can therefore be safely assumed that dust pollution is dangerous to those who are asthmatic.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Eye and skin irritation<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: Dust particles can cause irritation and inflammation of the eyes and skin, leading to redness, itching, and discomfort.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Some localized symptoms<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of irritation e.g. dry nose, throat irritation, coughing, sluggishness, sleepiness, headache, and inability to concentrate. These results indicate that non-industrial office dust may cause physiological changes and sensory symptoms in the eyes and nose.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/how-long-does-silica-dust-stay-in-the-air\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Silica dust<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has been found to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cause lung cancer<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> showing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> consistent evidence of a causal relationship between silica exposure and lung cancer in both animal and human models. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Asbestos-textured ceilings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> which are a possible source of asbestos exposure also show a risk of developing lung cancer in exposed individuals.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Particulate Matter of size 10mm (PM<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">10<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) found in dust <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">increases cardiovascular problems<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> resulting in a 2% increase for every 10\u00b5g\/m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">3 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of PM<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">10<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> dust in cardiovascular mortality risk as assessed on the same day of exposure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dust mitigation strategies<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dust mitigation strategies are measures taken to reduce or prevent the release of dust into the air. Using different methods transportation officials can use various dust management techniques by considering cost-benefit analysis.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Important dust suppression techniques include; reducing the traffic, reducing vehicle speed, watering the road surface, graveling unpaved roads, application of polymers and other chemicals, sealing with impermeable pavements, reducing exposed ground, windbreaks, using dust collectors and personal protection equipment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here are some <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">important dust mitigation strategies<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Water sprays and misting tools:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> This is one of the most common dust mitigation tools in construction, mining, and unpaved roads. Watering used both indoor and outdoor wet dust particles making them settle. Despite its common usage, using water alone as a dust suppressant has been associated with disadvantages such as short-lasting effects, destroying soil structure rendering it unsuitable for use as a sub-grade, and other sustainability concerns. Common chemicals used in dust suppression are polymers, bitumen emulsions, and other petroleum products.
