{"id":81263,"date":"2023-03-09T00:16:19","date_gmt":"2023-03-09T00:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/?p=81263"},"modified":"2023-06-27T05:36:02","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T05:36:02","slug":"japan-pours-billions-into-australian-coal-to-hydrogen-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/japan-pours-billions-into-australian-coal-to-hydrogen-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan Pours Billions into Australian Coal-to-Hydrogen Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a successful taste test, Japan is hungry for more Australian-made hydrogen. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Japanese government\u2019s clean energy fund will tip $2.35 billion into a new Victorian coal-to-hydrogen project in the Latrobe valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, Japan received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/australia-and-japan-partnering-for-a-clean-energy-future\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world\u2019s first hydrogen shipment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of liquid hydrogen (LH2). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headed by Japan\u2019s chosen consortium \u2013 featuring J-Power and Sumitomo \u2013 the project will use coal to generate hydrogen and rely on carbon capture and storage (CCS) innovations to control emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group aims to use the depleted oil and gas basins in Bass Straight to house the carbon it \u201ccan capture\u201d, relying on the project&#8217;s close proximity to the oceanic area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Victorian Government\u2019s CarbonNet project and ExxonMobil\u2019s Gippsland Basin joint venture are potential options for CCS, with one to be chosen over the next 12 months.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Victoria\u2019s peak conservation body, Environment Victoria, has raised concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group stated that the coal needed for the project would likely come from Loy Yang, the state\u2019s largest coal mine, which could also require an expansion.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Something that they are hoping to avoid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What\u2019s The True Cost of CCS?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environment Victoria, among other groups, has taken the opportunity to provide strong statements around its CCS concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;CCS is an unviable technology, and we know that it has never worked globally,&#8221; Environment Victoria policy and advocacy manager Bronya Lipski said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group has specifically highlighted the CCS Failings of WA\u2019s Gorgon gas project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gorgon aimed to capture 80% of its carbon emissions over a five-year period; however, by 2021 had only managed to store around 30%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Japanese consortium hopes to initially produce between 30,000 and 40,000 tonnes of gaseous hydrogen each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there could be an environmental price to pay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;That has massive complications regarding [mine] rehabilitation, not to mention all the use of water on already stressed river systems,\u201d Environment Victoria said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding, \u201cthat if the project proceeded as planned, communities in the Latrobe Valley and Hastings would pay the price environmentally, while the benefits were enjoyed in Japan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Coal to Hydrogen: The Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the two commodities might seem like oil and water in the modern energy landscape, coal and hydrogen share a link.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Namely, coal (or the moisture within it) can be leveraged to give up its hydrogen content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This \u201cgasification of coal\u201d produces grey hydrogen, which can become the blue hydrogen (cleaner) variant when paired with CCS methods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s hydrogen is supplied almost entirely from fossil fuels: 70% from natural gas and around 27% from coal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s forecast that by 2050, the world could demand upwards of 650 MtH2\/y of hydrogen, or around five times the current production levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transportation is expected to consume the lion&#8217;s share of future hydrogen stocks at around 185 MtH2\/y by 2050, or almost 30% of the total.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrogen\u2019s primary transport use will be fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), which can significantly reduce air pollution, especially in cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through a chosen consortium, the Japanese government will invest $2.35 billion in a Victorian coal-to-hydrogen project in the Latrobe Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a successful first shipment of liquid hydrogen (LH2) in 2022 via the purpose-built Susio-Frontier vessel, Japan is now keen for more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relying on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) methods, however, the project has come under scrutiny from environmental groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With its close proximity to Bass Straight, the partners J-Power and Sumitomo aim to use the region\u2019s abandoned oil and gas wells to store carbon emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Victoria\u2019s peak environmental body says the CCS approach \u201chas never worked globally\u201d and \u201cis an unviable technology\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this stage, the project is set to go ahead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dust suppression is an enduring issue in the world of mining and energy.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Learn more about GRT\u2019s industry-leading and IoT-connected <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/smart-dosing-units\/\"><b>SMART Dosing Units<\/b><\/a><b>, and discover how we\u2019re driving better dust suppression solutions for all!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Your feedback is important to us.
