{"id":81243,"date":"2023-03-02T00:10:23","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T00:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/?p=81243"},"modified":"2023-06-27T06:28:35","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T06:28:35","slug":"rio-tinto-and-bmw-partner-for-low-carbon-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/rio-tinto-and-bmw-partner-for-low-carbon-cars\/","title":{"rendered":"Rio Tinto and BMW partner for Low-Carbon Cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mining giant Rio Tinto and premium automotive brand BMW will partner to produce cars using zero-carbon aluminium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recently announced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two companies will rely on ELYSIS smelting technology developed in a JV between Rio and Alcoa.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cutting-edge technology is the first smelting process of its kind and can produce zero-carbon aluminium with pure oxygen as its only byproduct.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMW hopes to achieve a carbon saving of 70% by switching to clean aluminium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ore for Rio\u2019s low-carbon aluminium is currently sourced from its hydro-powered operations in Canada before getting mixed with recycled materials.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British miner is looking to the automotive industry to find new partners and, ultimately, buyers for its clean aluminium product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BMW deal marks a significant milestone, while an agreement with Japanese conglomerate Marubeni Corporation also holds promise.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, let\u2019s explore what makes aluminium such a critical material.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What\u2019s the big deal with Aluminium?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aluminium is the versatile all-rounder of the metals world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also comes with several competitive advantages over its metallic rivals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the leading choice for sustainable product development, due to its <\/span><b>low weight, strength, flexibility and infinite recyclability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Aluminium is in the box seat to benefit from the global drive to <a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/targeting-the-net-zero-technology-gap\/\">net-zero emissions<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aluminium is used in many forms and can be submitted to an array of processes, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cast<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melted<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formed\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machined, and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extruded\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This variability allows aluminium to be manufactured into various shapes before getting fabricated to suit a wide range of uses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also only about a third of the weight of steel, making it easier and cheaper to transport than most other metals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The six main benefits of aluminium over other metals are considered to be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The light weight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corrosion resistance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrical &amp;
