{"id":81011,"date":"2022-09-20T02:30:14","date_gmt":"2022-09-20T02:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/?p=81011"},"modified":"2022-09-20T02:41:24","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T02:41:24","slug":"grt-works-to-reduce-the-impact-of-red-dust-pilbara-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/grt-works-to-reduce-the-impact-of-red-dust-pilbara-region\/","title":{"rendered":"GRT works to reduce the impact of red dust on communities across the Pilbara region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Press Release: September 20th, 2022<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red dust caused by iron ore mining is synonymous with Western Australia\u2019s Pilbara region, however, evidence is growing that this form of particulate pollution is causing harm to the communities that call this remote location home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent failures in dust monitoring at Port Hedland which is one of the world\u2019s largest iron ore ports were compounded by a separate incident at the Mount Whaleback mine that impacted the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-10-12\/dust-levels-bhp-newman-iron-ore-mine-exceed-licence-limit\/12732272\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearby community of Newman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the latter instance, particulate pollution levels exceeded the agreed-upon limits set by the mining licence by a factor of 45 times, causing calls for a greater emphasis on dust suppression strategies by miners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dust pollution can also impact the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsj.com.au\/investigate-of-east-kimberley-mine-over-iron-ore-spill-into-creek\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health of waterways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the mining regions of Western Australia along with leaching events impacting the health of creeks and rivers that are vital to the ecosystem of one of the Kimberly region, which is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Australian headquartered mining and civil services firm Global Road Technology (GRT), these incidents emphasise the importance of a comprehensive and holistic approach to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/applications\/dust-suppression-solutions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dust suppression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to the dangers high levels of particulate \u2013 in the case of the Newman site, it was 40 per cent higher than the national environment protection measure \u2013 to mine workers and nearby communities alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keith Nare, GRT\u2019s Technical Product Manager, believes that local communities have cause for concern around the ubiquity of the region&#8217;s iconic red dust and that a key focus needs to stopping the spread of it at the source of the pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cOccurrences like these jeopardise the social and environmental licence the miners have,\u201d said Mr Keith Nare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is known that long-term exposure to high levels of dust places extra load on the body, particularly the respiratory system, and that people who live within areas impacted by dust pollution face a higher probability of having lung issues and cardiac-type symptoms. That\u2019s why engineering controls and mitigation strategies focussed that prevent dust generation or capture dust at the source are critical to worker and community health and safety.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-80954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/haul-truck-dust-suppression-has-never-been-smarter-1.jpg\" alt=\"haul-truck-dust-suppression-has-never-been-smarter (1)\" width=\"1000\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/haul-truck-dust-suppression-has-never-been-smarter-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/haul-truck-dust-suppression-has-never-been-smarter-1-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/haul-truck-dust-suppression-has-never-been-smarter-1-150x78.jpg 150w, https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/haul-truck-dust-suppression-has-never-been-smarter-1-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the arid conditions that occur in much of the parts of Australia where mining activity happens, the problem of dust pollution is exacerbated as the lack of rainfall allows the particulates to spread from the site much more quickly and can rapidly exceed recommended levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To mitigate dust pollution BHP alone plans to spend $300 million over the next five years across its Pilbara operations in an attempt to reduce the impact its operations have on the local communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some experts see this expenditure as critical for the miners to operate in a socially responsible manner in relation to how they impact the communities that exist close by.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to GRT Managing Director Troy Adams, these recent events validate the investment that the company is continually making into cutting-edge eco-friendly products and services designed specifically for managing and containing dust to protect workers on mining sites and nearby residents and landholders from airborne dust pollution and disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of our company\u2019s core goals is to reduce the impact of airborne dust on people and operations through innovative, cost-effective solutions,\u201d Mr Adams said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese solutions combine our unique products and hardware strategically implemented and guided by the GRT approach that focuses on minimising or even eliminating dust at the point of generation.
