{"id":75811,"date":"2018-10-15T07:36:22","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T07:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/?p=75811"},"modified":"2019-06-07T01:58:45","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T01:58:45","slug":"grts-effective-management-strategies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/grts-effective-management-strategies\/","title":{"rendered":"GRT\u2019s better understanding of hazardous dust generation leads to effective management strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Recent deaths from silicosis should serve as a warning to the entire resource sector within Australia and worldwide, about the danger to workers from exposure to dust pollution while working on mining projects.<\/h3>\n<p>Silicosis is being singled out as a potentially greater threat to workers health than coal dust following the recent death of Queensland coal miner Tyrone Buckton. Due to the presence of silica containing hard rock in and around coal seams, the dust produced by mining operations can be doubly hazardous \u2013 which is why it is such a threat to those working in the resource sector.<\/p>\n<p>Despite never spending a day underground, Mr Buckton, an open cut coal miner for more than 30 years, passed away in June, less than a year after being diagnosed with the disease in October 2017. To read the full article from ABC News <a href=\"http:\/\/amp.abc.net.au\/article\/9841584\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Exposure to silica dust is more pervasive in society than coal as it crosses over from the extractive\/processing industry itself into any industry producing or using:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cement and concrete<\/li>\n<li>Manufactured or natural stone<\/li>\n<li>Quarried materials \u2013 rock, sand, road base, asphaltic concrete<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This means workers cutting concrete pipes, kitchen benches (recently highlighted at a national level within Australia), saw-cutting roads and floors, handling cement, or even working and driving on unsealed road-base yards and tracks. Uncontrolled airborne dust can then impact on surrounding land-users, communities, livestock, and the environment. That\u2019s why a \u201cwhole-of-site\u201d approach is so critical in combatting the impact of dust pollution as its effects can be felt beyond the confines of the project area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-75131\" src=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/33global-road-technology-gravel-road-dust-control.jpg\" alt=\"global-road-technology-gravel-road-dust-control\" width=\"990\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/33global-road-technology-gravel-road-dust-control.jpg 990w, https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/33global-road-technology-gravel-road-dust-control-600x336.jpg 600w, https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/33global-road-technology-gravel-road-dust-control-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/33global-road-technology-gravel-road-dust-control-768x430.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 990px) 100vw, 990px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Traditional practices such as watering road surface counter-intuitively generate more fine material and degrade roads surfaces quicker. Water is forced into the pore spaces by traffic and pumps the fines to the surface where traffic and wind cause them to become airborne. This loss of fines, which are providing cohesion and binding to the road base, leads to the unsealed surface degrading even faster.<\/p>\n<p>In a crushing or shearing environment, spraying water alone can also be counter-productive as fine dust (such as coal and silica) are hydrophobic so spraying water can just be pushing the dust around \u2013 not stripping it out of the air as it is intended to do.<\/p>\n<p>Cases like Mr Buckton\u2019s and a recent report from the NSW Office of Environment &amp; Heritage about the community concern in relation to the impacts on health and amenity associated with particulate pollution from coal mining in NSW, highlight the need for resource companies to have a fully implemented onsite dust stop pollution reduction program (PRP).<\/p>\n<p>For anyone involved in the resource sector who is concerned about air pollution, I recommend that you take a moment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.nsw.gov.au\/your-environment\/air\/regional-air-quality\/minimising-particulate-pollution-coal-mines\">read this report<\/a> as it highlights the potential danger to our communities from dust exposure and the impact that it can have on the health of people who are simply going about their daily jobs.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In our own operations, our unsealed sites are managed with our own GRT dust suppression and erosion control products.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This strategy is focussed on eliminating the risk of dust being generated in the first place, rather than relying on PPE such as dust masks to manage exposure to our staff \u2013 including myself!<\/p>\n<h3>This approach also ensures that our operations don\u2019t impact on any of neighbours or the receiving environment.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/applications\/dust-control\/\">GRT has a range of technologies<\/a> (chemical and hardware) designed to manage dust across all stages of an operation.<\/p>\n<p>As a business, we are driven by cases like Mr Buckton\u2019s \u2013 because we are out there in the field working with people just like him who are simply doing their jobs.
