{"id":73181,"date":"2016-09-14T18:26:12","date_gmt":"2016-09-14T18:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fabricdigital.com.au\/grt\/?p=73181"},"modified":"2019-05-02T06:28:04","modified_gmt":"2019-05-02T06:28:04","slug":"pavement-overlay-considerations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/pavement-overlay-considerations\/","title":{"rendered":"Pavement Overlay Considerations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In many instances, the point in which a pavement reaches the end of it\u2019s functional life does not require the removal of the existing pavement material for rehabilitation purposes.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">An overlay treatment is that which incorporates additional material to over the existing pavement. The use of overlays are generally applied for two reasons including a) the requirement for shape correction of an existing pavement or b) the requirement for structural reinforcement of the pavement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">For the most part, overlays comprise the addition of granular, modified granular or <a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/the-performance-characteristics-of-asphalt\/\">asphalt materials<\/a> to a thickness considered appropriate for the section and its influencing factors. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A number of considerations required for the determination of overlay thicknesses include:<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">a) existing subgrade support \u2013 consideration must be given to the support provided by the existing subgrade including the likelihood that it has been mechanically compacted over the previous life of the pavement and may have reached equilibrium moisture content<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">b) project traffic loading \u2013 consideration must be given to the likelihood of growth of the existing traffic volumes and any implications of local development<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">c) future rehabilitation treatment \u2013 the potential reuse of the overlaid material whether it be through <a href=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/mix-design-process-insitu-stabilized-materials\/\">insitu stabilization<\/a> or hot insitu asphalt recycling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">d) vertical clearance \u2013 consideration should be given to any height restrictions or implications of raising finished surface levels whether it be from a hydraulic perspective (creating a dam effect) or conflicts associated with guardrail or other road furniture i.e. kerb and channel.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73976\" src=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bitumen-stabilised-pavements-global-road-technology.jpg\" alt=\"bitumen-stabilised-pavements-global-road-technology\" width=\"1000\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bitumen-stabilised-pavements-global-road-technology.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bitumen-stabilised-pavements-global-road-technology-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bitumen-stabilised-pavements-global-road-technology-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/globalroadtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bitumen-stabilised-pavements-global-road-technology-768x433.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">From a structural design perspective, the use of falling weight deflectometer (FWD) is often a cost effective method of determining the support provided by the existing pavement.
